Thiemo Wind, Adriana vanden Bergh (Berch): The Euterpe of Jacob Backer and of Paulus Matthijsz (Instant Harmony Essays, no. 2)

In the 1640s, Paulus Matthijsz, the Amsterdam publisher of Jacob van Eyck’s Der Fluyten Lust-hof, issued two other collections that he dedicated to Adriana vanden Bergh, a child prodigy on the recorder and viola da gamba. Adriana’s identity has remained a mystery until now.

In a beautiful piece of detective work, Thiemo Wind demonstrates who she was, looks at her sad and turbulent life, and concludes that she is the Euterpe depicted in a striking portrait by the Dutch artist Jacob Backer. He also discusses what recorder music she would have played and in what circumstances.
Cogently written and lavishly illustrated. Great reading for recorder enthusiasts and lovers of art history! Another gem in the Instant Harmony Essay series.
