I retired as Head of Music Reference Services in the Cook Music Library, Indiana University–Bloomington in February 2011 after working there for 24 years. Many kind people view me as one of the world’s foremost researchers of the history of woodwind instruments, especially members of the flute family. I have also published a series of books about the New Orleans modern jazz group Astral Project.

I hold a Ph.D. in musicology from The University of Iowa (1983), and my dissertation won a national prize. One of my articles, one of my books, and two of the books I co-authored have also won prizes, and I received a lifetime achievement award from the American Recorder Society in 2011. See all of the prizes here.

All of my books and editions published by Instant Harmony are available for purchase on www.instantharmony.net. You may also download free copies of almost all my articles there.
